And keep reading to learn more about Noroton Presbyterian Nursery School and their Reggio Emilia infused approach to learning!
NPNS is a ministry of Norton Presbyterian Church and is inspired by the Reggio Emilia teaching philosophy. This approach is rooted in the belief that children are competent learners with a pre-existing knowledge base. Teachers are companions on the learning journey and the environment is an important prompt through which teachers, parents and the community engage children in the joy of exploration and inspiration.
Children are always encouraged to try new things, think out of the box, succeed, fail, regroup and try again. NPNS promotes trial and error and provides emotional support through applause, encouragement and modeling healthy relationships. NPNS puts an emphasis on play-based learning and most playthings in the school are made from natural materials. Such as wooden blocks, shells, pine cones, and playdough made by the children themselves!
The children occasionally take field trips to places like the New Canaan Nature Center, and regularly have sessions with proctors from the Darien Nature Center on subjects like how seeds grow and why animals hibernate. Additionally, the classroom environment is enriched by Chapel Time which is used to help children learn about God through Bible stories, action songs, and special prayers.
